Compassionate Inquiry® is a trauma-informed approach developed by Dr Gabor Maté, physician and author. It is a way of being curious, together, about what is happening beneath the surface.
“When an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate.”
“Trauma is not what happens to you but what happens inside you.”
Compassionate Inquiry can be useful when something from your past still seems to shape how you feel or act today, when it is hard to understand your own behaviour or the way you relate to other people and to the world, or when you feel stuck in a pattern, meeting the same difficulty again and again. If any of this sounds familiar, this may be a good place to start.
We do not begin with the past. We begin with what is here now: a pain or symptom you are living with, a tightness in the chest, a knot in the stomach, a feeling you cannot quite name. We notice what your body is telling us. We follow the body, not a map.
From there we become curious about the emotion, and about the belief that sits beneath it: an idea about yourself or the world, often carried for a long time without your knowing, that shapes how you respond.
If it feels right, we may ask when it first appeared. Not to find someone to blame, and not to explain everything away, but to understand how it formed, what it has cost you, and whether it still needs to be there. Understanding often opens the way to compassion, for yourself as much as for others.
We always return to the present, to your body and your life today.
It is not analysis. We are not looking for reasons or for someone to blame, and we do not go back into the past for its own sake.
The acupuncture comes after the conversation. It helps what has come into awareness settle in the body, so that the body can be more present with its actual situation. Some people come for acupuncture alone. Both are welcome.
I completed the Compassionate Inquiry training and have been a certified practitioner since 2023.
